The only things that seems to get me through my periods are Lucozade and chocolate covered raisins. No amount of painkillers or hot water bottles help me and these two items are all that enable me to stand up sometimes when the cramps and fatigue set in. Since going vegan, chocolate covered raisins seem to be considered a luxury as I have never been able to find them unless in some specialist health food store and usually for about £5+. So needless to say…I have suffered.
The relief I felt in my soul when I came across these in Sainsbury’s is…immeasurable. It was day one, my legs (thighs, calves and glutes) were started to seize up with the cramps so it took me 20 minutes to walk 10 minutes up the road. I grabbed my trusty lucozade, a basic bar of chocolate and there they were…shining like a beacon of hope in the distance. I didn’t even think twice. I even started eating them on my walk back to work, and after the first few handfuls my legs felt like I could run a marathon and still not tire.
For all I know it is something psychological, but these turned me back into a functioning human being. I have no idea why. I know that dried fruit is one of the best sources of iron possible, but when checking, they only seem to contain 9% of your RDA of iron. That doesn’t sound like a lot to me but I am not a nutritionist or anything like that. But maybe it’s the glucose and sugar of them that stop my body cramping? Either way, they are a genuine life saver. If you know about about food values please do let me know in the comments below!
This packet was also £1 (on sale) but it was also a pretty decent size packet. It really did last me the rest of the day, and I even had a few handfuls left over for the next day too. They were very moreish, so that wasn’t even me trying to save any. They definitely perked me up a bit and gave me a lot of very needed energy to get through a manic work day and yet another horrific period.
Even if you don’t bleed monthly, I would always recommend chocolate covered raisins as a snack. They are so yummy and so moreish that I could easily eat nothing but these for the rest of my life. Not even exaggerating there. But if you do bleed, or if you’re having a bit of a down day and need an extra kick, these will absolutely do the trick.
