I have heard many a vegan rave about cauliflower steak and we finally decided to give it a try! Having never had it before, we kept it super basic and I have to say even the basic version was very yummy.
Method
- Cut your cauliflower into ‘steaks’ – i.e cut it in half and then cut thin slices, like you’re cutting bread.
- In a frying pan, fry the steak in some oil/water for 2 minutes on each side. You can leave it a little longer if you prefer a more ‘smokey, chargrilled’ flavour
- Add salt and pepper to taste and then put the cauliflower steaks on a baking try and cook in the oven for 20mins at 200 degrees.
- Serve!

Like I said we had a VERY basic attempt, but even with just salt and pepper this was really good. I can see why people rave about it so much!
Next time, we will probably try to cut the steaks a little thinner: We found the thinner parts of the cauliflower crisped up really nicely on the outside and was lovely and soft in the middle, whereas the thicker bits were not as crispy. We may also try experimenting with some different spices and flavourings: maybe piri piri? Or lots of paprika and a tiny amount of chilli?
