In an attempt to cheer ourselves up over this lock down period in England, my partner and I decided to treat ourselves to some Papa John’s pizza. At the time of writing this, Papa John’s is still open and they are now doing a no-contact delivery – so win win for us in this social distancing world. We also decided to treat ourselves to the cinnamon knots, as they are vegan friendly and who doesn’t want a little treat in this trying time?
As the name suggests, they are like cinnamon swirls, just in knot formation. As you can see in the picture above, you get a pretty generous serving of them and the swirls themselves are actually pretty big. They are also VERY yummy. They have a nice kick of cinnamon and the icing on them is just enough sweetness without being overpowering.
The only issue I have with them is that they can be quite stodgy: They are more like bread than they are cake, and usually are a bit hit and miss with each knot made. In one batch you may get one that has been cooked a bit too long, so it is too chewy and a bit hard to bite into on the outside. You may then get one that is light on the seasoning, so you are just eating a little knot of dough. Granted that is not always a bad thing, but it does mean you play Russian roulette with what type of knot you will get next. I have also had a few servings where the icing has been put on top with what I can only imagine to be a bucket-sized serving, which then means that the icing soaks into the knots making them rather mushy when hot, then as the icing cools it acts as cement and you end up with one massive cinnamon knot that had melded itself to the takeout container.
That being said, when you get one that is right, these little babies are delightful! My partner and I can go through these with no issue, and yes we sometimes may feel a bit bloated afterwards from the sheer mass of dough that we have just consumed, but we knew the deal going into it. We did this to ourselves.
