Taylor Tries Papa John’s ‘Pepperoni’

If there is one thing you need to know about me, it is that I love a good pizza. When I first went vegan, this was the hardest thing to come to terms with: No proper pizza, with that beautiful instagram worthy stretchy cheese. For the first few years of my journey, I had become accustomed to pizza without any cheese on it, and definitely no take away pizza.

Then came Papa Johns. In 2019 they introduced the Vegan Sheese onto their pizzas, which made me a very happy little vegan indeed. Now, for 2020 Veganuary, they have released the ‘Pepperphoni’, which as it suggests is a vegan pepperoni, made from jackfruit.

Truth be told, I never like pepperoni to begin with so have only tried meat pepperoni once and when I was very young. I don’t tend to like too much spice in my food (bad vegan, I know) as I always find it super overpowering. I cannot remember what it tasted like normally, but this stuff was pretty damn close. It had the signature little spice to it that had initially turned me off of pepperoni, but with the cheese and the pizza as a whole it was nice to have a flavour that wasn’t just cheese for once.

The best thing about the pepperphoni though was having it cold the next day. I love pizza, but there is only so much I can eat in one go. I like to save at least a few slices for breakfast the next day (don’t judge me) and, somewhat surprisingly, the pepperphoni was actually nicer cold. It still had a good kick to it, but the taste wasn’t as overpowering as I had thought it would be.

Overall: 7/10. Personally, I still prefer just a regular margherita pizza but as a little treat once in a while, this is definitely a must.
